The stepped base is boxwood and ebony chequer-inlaid and rests on block feet. The case is stamped on the metalwork with Cole’s serial number 1594 in numerous places. DIAL The 5 inch diameter gilt dial is elaborately engraved in a geometric design with Roman chapters, blued steel hands and signed Tho Boxell Brighton. MOVEMENT An apron to the bottom of the dial is set with the steel winding square for the going barrel of the movement with deadbeat escapement and maintaining power, the pendulum has a gilt-brass rod and terminates with a silvered spherical bob with brass rating nut. The backplate is signed Boxell, Brighton 1056, the base of the backplate is stamped with Cole’s serial number 1594.
