A very rare George III mahogany striking tavern clock. CASE The case with elegantly carved ears applied to the top of the trunk flanking the top of the trunk door with concave top and brass hinges, mahogany beading to the angled base. The inside of the trunk with iron rods to each side with ring sliders to guide the weights. The top of the trunk fitted with hinged doors with original brass latches. DIAL Large glazed mahogany bezel to the 18inch diameter silvered dial boldly signed John Harvey WEYMOUTH with Roman and Arabic chapters and pierced blued steel hands. MOVEMENT Rectangular brass plates with four baluster pillars secured to the seatboard by two steel screws, anchor escapement with steel-rod pendulum with brass bob, high count train with large pinions for the short drop. Rack strike on the hour bell above. Provenance; Strike One (Islington), sold 1992 for £8,450 John Harvey was born in 1758 and died in 1829. According to Tribe and Whatmore, Dorset Clocks and Clockmakers, he ran Harvey’s library and traded there as a clockmaker. These authors refer to ….many fine longcases of the highest quality and illustrate a regulator, longcase and dial clock by him.
