A very fine gilt-brass eight-day chronometer carriage timepiece with original leather travelling box and key. CASE The trapezoidal case retains the original gilding and is signed at back THOMAS MERCER ST ALBANS ENGLAND ESTABLISHED 1858 No. 1186, the back cover is further set with a hand adjustment button and Stop/Start lever; bevel glazed sides and top. DIAL The silvered dial is signed Thomas Mercer above the Roman chapter ring with blued steel spade hands, subsidiary seconds ring at XII and up-down sector dial above VI. MOVEMENT The movement has finely spotted brass plates, reversed fusee, chain and spring barrel; the going train terminates with a chronometer escapement with Earnshaw-type spring detent with a jewelled locking stone, the free-sprung cut bimetallic balance has circular heat compensation weights and a palladium helical balance spring, the platform is signed and numbered Mercer 1186 MADE IN ENGLAND TRAVELLING BOX & KEY The original black leather travelling box is lined with dark blue velvet and signed Thomas Mercer on the lid, the inside of which has a leather fastener for the original tipsy brass winding key.
