A very rare small mahogany dial clock with verge escapement. CASE The narrow concave-moulded brass bezel has a deep convex glass and is hinged to the delicate moulded mahogany outer bezel. The box is mahogany to the four sides with doors to the right side and base with original brass latches and hinges, oak backboard. DIAL The painted brass convex dial is signed Rich. Chater LONDON within the Roman & Arabic chapter ring with original pierced blued steel hands. MOVEMENT The movement has A-shaped plates, singe gut fusee and spring barrel and the original verge escapement with short bob pendulum. RICHARD CHATER Richard Chater is recorded working in Cornhill, London. He was apprenticed in 1774 and working from 1781 to 1811. He son Richard junior later joined the business, which was then named Chater & Son.
