Liverpool A very fine striking skeleton clock Type: Series Two Circa 1860 DIAL With a narrow silvered chapter ring secured to the front plate by three delicate pillars with blued steel screws to the front and back. The ring is engraved with Roman numerals and outer minute track, with blued steel Breguet-style hands. FRAME With rectangular brass base raised on ball feet and applied with a plaque to the front engraved Litherland Davies & Co. LIVERPOOL. The beautiful delicate scrolling frame comprises two identical pierced plates secured by seven baluster pillars with blued steel screws to the front and pinned at the back � save for the upper central pillar which is screwed at the back in conjunction with the suspension block. WHEEL TRAINS Both spring barrels with five spoked crossings to the front and back caps showing the coiled springs within, the clicks hidden to the rear. The going train with delicate five spoked wheels terminating in a deadbeat escapement with the original pendulum. The strike train also with delicate wheels with five spokes and rack and snail clearly visible through the centre of the chapter ring with the hours being struck via trip linkage on a gong within the mahogany veneered base. Condliff�s second series skeleton clocks are epitomised by their exquisite scroll frames. Condliff made two different type; the first being a slightly more slender example with balance wheel escapement, the second being a pendulum clock, as in this example with deadbeat escapement. Litherland Davies & Co. was founded by Peter Litherland of Liverpool in 1790, when he died in 1804 the company continued as Litherland & Company and in subsequent years became Litherland Whiteside & Company and later Litherland Davies & Company until 1876.
