A fine quality walnut and Arabesque marquetry striking table clock with pull quarter repeat. The well-proportioned case has an oak carcass veneered entirely with walnut inlaid with ebony and boxwood Arabesque foliate marquetry inhabited with grotesque masks within wheatear borders. The base is raised on brass bun feet, the sides are glazed with the addition of brass sound frets, glazed marquetry rear door, domed top surmounted by a fine foliate cast brass handle. The 7 inch square brass dial is engraved with a fine wheatear border framing the four gilt-brass winged cherub spandrels to the corners of the silvered chapter ring signed Markwick London enclosing a matted centre with ringed winding holes, mock pendulum aperture and blued steel hands. The substantial brass movement has front and rear plates joined by six ring-turned pillars; twin fusees and spring barrels with gut lines, well-constructed re-converted knife- edge verge escapement with elaborate back-cock and pear drop bob to the pendulum with holdfast in the centre of the backplate; the hours struck on a bell, the quarters on a nest of 5 bells; the backplate elaborately engraved with symmetrical scrolling foliage centred by the signature Jams. Markwick London within a foliate cartouche; the movement secured within the case by 2 steel bolts through the baseboard into the base pillars.
