A rare miniature walnut striking table clock. Case The fine walnut case is surmounted with a brass handle on an extended single pad above the break arch case, glazed side panels and moulded base resting on block feet. Dial The 4-inch break-arch dial is signed Jno Monkhouse London in a silvered sector in the matted centre with mock pendulum aperture, silvered chapter ring with blued steel hands, foliate spandrels and date ring in the arch. Movement The five pillar twin fusee movement has verge escapement with bob pendulum and rack strike on a bell above the plates, the backplate is finely engraved foliate scrollwork surrounding the matching the signature Jno. Monkhouse, London. Jonathan Monkhouse, was active circa 1750-70. Monkouse was not a prolific maker, few clocks by him survive to date. However there exists an early clock by Nicholas Vallin in the British Museum clock where it appears that the replacement 18th century movement is by Monkhouse, who also added his signature to the dial, a practice not uncommon in the late 18th century qv the Vulliamy family.
