A very fine and small ebony mantel timepiece. Case The case is oak veneered in beautifully figured ebony with ogee-moulded top surmounted by a foliate cast brass handle, glazed sides and doors, the case resting on adjustable toupee feet Dial The silvered dial is signed Grimalde & Johnson Strand, London above the Roman chapter ring with blued steel Breguet-style hands Movement The movement has four cylindrical pillars, fusee and spring barrel with wire lines, anchor escapement with pendulum holdfast on the backplate which is further signed Grimalde & Johnson Strand, London, brass movement securing brackets to the case. Grimalde & Johnson were in partnership between 1809-1825. They are perhaps best known for making these small well-proportioned ebony and ebonised table clocks which were made in very limited numbers.
