A pretty ebonised mantel timepiece with enamel dial and balance wheel escapement. Case With detachable stepped top inset with a campaign handle, removed to reveal the escapement viewing aperture, brass-framed glazed sides and door, on brass bun feet. Dial Signed Arnold & Dent London 362 on an enamel dial with Roman numerals and blued steel hands, within a very finely cast and chased gilt-brass mask. Movement High quality with 4 cylindrical pillars, chain fusee with maintaining power and spring barrel, large escapement platform with cut bimetallic balance and underslung lever escapement, fully signed backplate. Provenance Dr. Crott auctioneers, Germany, June 2017 lot 243 €15,000 In 1830 John Roger Arnold persuaded the young Edward Dent to join him in a business partnership that was to last 10 years. The business prospered, making very fine quality marine chronometers and also some splendid carriage and mantel clocks. The present clock is a particularly fine example of their work being of small size with an arresting enamel dial off-set by the foliate engraved mask and finally the detachable top on bayonet fixings which reveals to show the excellent quality platform lever escapement.
