DENT & Co. Edward John Dent (1790-1853) was one of the most influential clockmakers of precision horology in the 19th century, ranking alongside Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy and Charles Frodsham. He specialised in many fields including marine and pocket chronometers table clocks, wall and longcase regulators, all of the very highest quality. Perhaps the company's most famous achievement was the construction of the world-famous clock at Westminster, otherwise known as Big Ben. From 1876 the Company traded as E. Dent & Co and in 1897 they became a limited company and adopted their famous trademark name DENT within a simple triangle – as can be seen on the present wall regulator. Having previously had different serial number sequences for their clocks, watches, and marine chronometers, from 1876 the company adopted a single-series numbering sequence starting at No. 38,000 which covered all their clocks, watches and chronometers inclusive. Dent produced a small number of high-quality precision clocks for domestic use, typified by the present example for sale here. This particular clock has a simple but beautifully constructed solid mahogany case, the movement has Dent's high-quality deadbeat escapement, the original painted dial and it even retains the original oak-rod pendulum, together with the original brass-cased weight and pulley.
