A very rare and early black and gilt lacquered shield dial tavern timepiece. CASE The oak & pine case of the earliest style known for tavern clocks with black lacquer ground and gilt decoration with a bolection moulded frame around the shield-shaped dial flanked below by supporting wings which extend the full width of the dial centred by the trunk door with original moulded base DIAL The shield-shaped dial is signed Richard Hindmore London in lovely cursive script with a Roman chapter ring and well pierced brass hour and minute hands MOVEMENT The movement has rectangular plates with four ringed pillars, five-wheel train with anchor escapement, flat brass-rod pendulum with brass-faced bob and large lead weight. Richard Hindmore of London is listed in Baillie as ‘Early 18th century”
