The 16¼ inch circular painted wood convex dial is signed WILLm WALL, RICHMOND in the centre of the Roman chapter ring with outer Arabic five minute chapters with pierced blued steel ‘beetle and poker’ hands. Large cast brass bezel with convex glass set into a moulded mahogany frame. The mahogany back box has a drop door in the curved base and two side doors. The movement has thick brass tapered plates and four large baluster pillars. The going train has a fusee and spring barrel with wire lines, three wheel train with anchor escapement. William Wall is recorded working in Richmond, Surrey at the end of the 18th century. Another William Wall, probably William’s son, is recorded working in Putney & Wandsworth from 1791 until 1839 – he patented a special escapement with two escape wheels.
