A very rare early rolling ball clock. The rosewood base retains the original red silk lining and the clock is protected by a wonderful purpose-made barrel-vaulted dome. Congreve's early 19th century rolling ball clocks were made in tiny numbers and are subsequently extremely rare. Congreve was an prolific inventor, he also has the impressive distinction for having designed a type of military rocket that was used to great effect on the French fleet. A rolling ball clock is exhibited in the clock collection at the British Museum.
