The Guggenheim Tompion No. 223

Circa 1693

Sold

7 ft 8 inches high

An extremely rare and important month-going mulberry veneered longcase clock with the original numbered winding key and impeccable provenance. The beautifully figured case retains the original caddy top and it is crossbanded throughout with kingwood inlay. The 11 inch dial retains the original gilding and blued steel hands and the fully latched 6 pillar movement is particularly well preserved and even retains the original pendulum. Tompion made approximately 145 longcase clocks and only 4 complete mulberry examples have survived. It is thought that this is the only surviving Tompion long case clock to have retained its original numbered winding key.
